Large Size Horizontal Boring Mills (HBM)

Y-axis vertical travel available up to 14 m (46’)

Horizontal Boring Mills (HBM) – The SCHIESS name has always been associated with very large, floor type, horizontal boring, drilling, and milling machines. SCHIESS BRIGHTON continues this tradition by offering horizontal boring mills with spindle diameters to 320 mm (12.5”) and vertical Y axis travels up to 14 m (46‘). These machines can be offered with a wide variety of accessories to match different machining application, such as rotary tables, floor plates, tool and head changers, special milling heads, and other customized tools.

HoriMill Features

  1. The ram and spindle are offered with extremely long extensions. The ram stroke can reach 2500 mm (98”), and the spindle stroke can reach 1700 mm (66”). The maximum combined stroke of ram and spindle is 4200 mm (165”). The spindle runs in hydrostatic bearings providing very high circularity precision and heavy milling capability. The ram guide ways are also hydrostatic and ensure maximum stiffness over the entire travel range.

  2. Rotary tables are offered in various dimensions and have a load capacity of up to 1000 tons. They operate on the same principle as the tables of the vertical boring mills so that they can be used for positioning, turning or milling applications as a full feeding B-axis.

  3. The ram is optionally equipped with a built-in C-axis. With this option the machine can perform 5-axes contouring work using a single axis (A-axis) tilting head.

  4. The column travel in the X-axis is driven through a rack-and-pinion system with multiple servo motors operating in tandem or with preload so as to eliminate backlash, similar to the arrangement in the gantry mills. Positioning accuracy is maintained by feedback from linear scales in the X-axis and all other axes.
